Prezi of Talk on Virtual Worlds as Mult-dimensional Learning Environments

Here is the slide presentation from a keynote presentation about "Using Virtual Worlds to Aggregate Learning Environments" that I delivered along with Barry Joseph of Global Kids, Audrey Aronowsky of the Field Museum of Chicago and Amana Kazkasi, a Global Kids teen leader. The occasion was a really neat conference called "Digital Is..." sponsored by the National Writing Project, a nation-wide network of thousands of K-12 teachers concerned with literacy and writing.

Basically, Barry, Audrey, Amana and I spent about 40 minutes describing the "I Dig Science" program, an initiative to expose young people to science and culture in new ways through the virtual world of Teen Second Life. In it's first two years, groups of young people in New York City and Chicago have had the opportunity to go on short "virtual fossil digs" to Tanzania and Zambia from within Second Life. Role playing as fossil hunters, they connected on a daily basis with a real life team of paleontologists in the field, who send back videos and photos and called them every day from satellites phones into Second Life.

For our keynote, we focused on how "I Dig Science" aggregates a number of different learning environments -- from virtual worlds, online social media, and real world experiences -- in order to engage our young people with the subject matter in new and compelling ways.

The slides are admittedly a bit hard to follow without hearing us speak as the slides flow by. We'll prepare a complete video combining the slides, video from our presentations, and synced audio as soon as we can. But hopefully this will give you some gist of what we talked about.

We had a lot of fun creating this presentation using the online tool Prezi, which allows anyone to combine text, photos and videos onto a nearly limitless two-dimensional canvas -- and then present it to other people as a fun, spinny slideshow. Enjoy!

Transgendered Display

Transgender Day of Remembrance, November 20th, memorializes those who have died due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The month of November has also been set aside as Transgender Awareness Month.

During November a small display has been set up at the Stonewall Learning Center on Info Island with links to resources on the day, the month and further information on transgender.

Create a Virtual Holiday Wreath to Support Micro-lending around the World

Linden Lab sends out word about a "Winterfest Wreath Competition," sponsored by Xstreet SL to benefit the micro-lending nonprofit Kiva.org. Second Life residents are invited to create and submit virtual holiday wreaths, which will be judged by folks from Linden Lab and Kiva. The winning entries will be offered for sale on Xstreet with all the proceeds to benefit Kiva.

For those that don't know Kiva, they are a great charity that supports direct micro-lending straight to entrepreneurs from around the world who are working to get out of poverty. It's a really innovative model for poverty alleviation that is well worth supporting.

Impartial judges from KIVA and Linden Lab’s Commerce Team will review all submitted wreaths before selecting six (6) winners. Winners of the wreath design contest will receive recognition and appropriate branding in promotional messages of the Winterfest Wreaths.

RezEd Podcast #44: Second Life Enterprise for Educators, Rezzable's Heritage Key and more!

This week's RezEd.org podcast is particularly spectacular, featuring lots of interesting information for virtual world educators and developers. RezEd episode #54, produced by MediaSnackers with Global Kids, includes interviews with Terrence Cummings of Linden Lab about Second Life Enterprise for the educational community. Terrence mentions in the interview that Linden Lab discounts the normally $55,000 SL Enterprise suite of services to only $38,000 for educational institutions. Still steep for many organizations (like Global Kids) but an impressive set of offerings for educators.

We also talk with Jon Himoff, CEO of Rezzable about their Heritage Key educational world, built on top of the OpenSim platform. And we hear from Rich White, of Greenbush Education Service Center discussing their work integrating interactive whiteboards and virtual teaching.

Summary: LIS graduates find themselves working in a variety of rapidly changing workplaces; changing technology and changing roles in the workplace and in society. We will be discussing how or if LIS programs are adapting to meet the needs of the workplace, what people learned or wish they had learned, continuing education, and whether or not an LIS degree is valuable to today's workplace.

Dr. Wertheimer is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii Manoa and has experience working in public and academic libraries and an archive.

Ben Hoganson is a graduate of the MLIS program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and is currently working as an Information Research Specialist with the Idaho National Laboratory.

Chris Nelson is currently studying Library and Information Science at San Jose State University.

Cindy Hill is the owner of Hill Information Consulting Group and received her MLIS from San Jose State University.

Hope for Women of the World.

We hope that you find this exhibit and its many resources more than
merely informative. We hope that you find them upsetting and that you
are moved to do what you can in your own personal way to address the
challenges they lay out. Our mothers, our sisters, ….. half of
humanity is disadvantaged, receives disproportionately lower quality
health care and education, and is systematically victimized by the
other half. This is true in all parts of the world, but most
dramatically in the developing nations where poverty and war
accentuate the issues.

If the plight of women were only about inequality, it would be tragic
enough. Denying half the world's population their share of the
planet's resources and failing to recognize their contributions as
human beings is unconscionable. In fact, however, this is only the
relatively benign tip of the iceberg. Worldwide, women are the victims
of brutalizing violence and degrading sexual exploitation. In many
societies, especially in developing countries, they are denied basic
human rights, even to the point of slavery. To be a woman in many
parts of today's world is to be consigned to a life of fear and
desperation.

Learning about these issues is deeply disturbing. It should be. It is
natural that our first response should be anger. There are more than
enough people to blame for the status of women in the world. And yet
we feel that the way to use anger is to reshape it into zeal for
changing the way things are. This exhibit is a gateway to resources
about the challenges women face, therefore, but it is more than that.
It is a link to the many organizations and individuals who care, and
whose efforts offer hope that women's lives can be improved and they
can enjoy the dignity that they deserve. We focus on four areas of
hope:

* Relief from Sexual Trafficking
* Relief from Violence and Injustice
* Economic Development
* Education

web where you can learn much more than we could ever present here.

Learning about the SLA Alignment via Second Life

Last night, November 17, 2009, several members of the SLA Public Relations Advisory Council participated in a session in Second Life. It was an excellent session covering the amazing work going on around the SLA Alignment project. They provided background and purpose of the Alignment and their own stories and thoughts about the project.

I learned a lot about the Alignment efforts and also was able to directly talk with speakers - it was great! I am so thankful for the work they are doing and the ways in which they are connecting with members to participate in this effort.

Public Forum Today on "Power of Youth Voice" in Second Life

Today, November 18, I will be producing a Second Life simulcast of an event called "The Power of Youth Voice," a public forum about the potential for learning through engagement with digital media. It will take place on Wednesday, November 18, beginning at 4pm SLT / 7pm EST. The forum will bring together experts in digital media and learning to share their research and experiences using digital media in and outside of the classroom. Speakers include:

RL Librarian Chats will start up again

I have offered to revive the RL Librarian Chat series and the first event has been scheduled. I would gladly accept other ideas for speakers.

One change is that both ACRL and LLAMA have offered their support and the ability to advertise through their communication channels. I hope it may convince others that Second Life has opportunities that they are missing and/or at least give them a reason to give SL a try. Since ACRL and LLAMA both have lots of members in SL, I will also be experimenting with different ways to share transcripts or videos after the events.

It is my first attempt to run and organize an event in SL, so let me know if I am doing anything wrong, or if I miss part of the established process. I have placed the event on the calendar already.

RL Librarian Chat: A monthly discussion series that features real life librarians talking about their RL jobs. Cosponsored by ACRL and LLAMA. The discussion series is being revived after a short hiatus.

Brian Gray (Brian Garfield in SL) is the Head of Reference & Engineering Librarian at the Kelvin Smith Library, Case Western Reserve University. He will discuss his role as a "college-based" librarian in the School of Engineering. He will also talk about the new roles the library has taken in outreach and integration into various roles at the university, including partnerships related to research areas defined by the university's strategic plan. He is a also the webmaster for LLAMA and teaches web 2.0 and technology courses for Kent State University School of Library & Information Science. Discussion could take many directions depending on the participants.

Virtual Praxis Women's Conference in Second Life November 21-22

Come learn about the international community of women in Second Life from Saturday November 21 to Sunday November 22 at the "Virtual Praxis" conference, sponsored by Ohio State University's Women's Department.

The two day gathering brings together women activists, educators, researchers, and artists to meet on such topics as "cyborg feminism," action against gender violence, and women with disabilities. Several nonprofits active in Second Life will be presenting, including Uthango Social Investments from South Africa, Gimp Girl, and Transitions: A Place for Dreams, which helps displaced people and refugees. Library Buzz Panel: Are LIS Programs on Target for Today’s Workplace?

Summary: LIS graduates find themselves working in a variety of rapidly changing workplaces; changing technology and changing roles in the workplace and in society. Join us as we meet with a panel representing current LIS students, recent LIS graduates entering the work force, LIS professors, and working Librarians to discuss the role of LIS education in this dynamic field. We will be discussing how or if LIS programs are adapting to meet the needs of the workplace, what people learned or wish they had learned, continuing education, and whether or not an LIS degree is valuable to today's workplace.

Dr. Wertheimer is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii Manoa and has experience working in public and academic libraries and an archive.

Ben Hoganson is a graduate of the MLIS program at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and is currently working as an Information Research Specialist with the Idaho National Laboratory.

Chris Nelson is currently studying Library and Information Science at San Jose State University.

Cindy Hill is the owner of Hill Information Consulting Group and received her MLIS from San Jose State University.

Questions to be addressed:

1.Do you think what you learned in Library School prepares you to be a librarian?
2.What did you learn that you don't think you'll need (or haven’t needed) and conversely, what didn't you learn that you wish you had?
3.Should an MLIS degree be required to be a librarian?
4.Should librarians have a positive requirement for CE or certification?
5.What do you think is necessary for those just entering the library/information profession?
6.What is going on in LIS programs today that is addressing these changes?

ROI in Corporate Libraries - Great Library Buzz Session!

This past Tuesday night, November 10th, 2009, SLA hosted a Library Buzz session on ROI in Corporate Libraries. Springer discussed the research they conducted in partnership with Outsell Inc. The research included 4 libraries / information centers and the results from Sun Microsystems were included in this session - it was a great session and you can review the slides here: Download Springer-ROIinCorporateLibraries.
