Decorating Your Garden In 3 Simple Steps

Decorating your garden to reflect your personality is one of the more interesting and fun things about gardening. To do this you will want to create your garden in three steps.

1. Decide on your layout. A formal garden will have straight lines and very structured paths, while a cottage garden will have flowing lines and meandering paths.

2. After deciding on the layout of your garden, decide on the plants you are going to pick for it. Japanese Maple and Bamboo are suited for the modern style, Roses suit the traditional style and the perenials like Black Eyed Susan and Coneflower are best suited for the country styles of gardens.

3. Deciding on your accessories. Choosing the right accessories and plants is very important as they both together make your garden attractive and are always depend on each other to do so and hence play an important role in representing your personality.

The accessories for your garden can be decorative containers, garden gates and fences, and statuary. The selection of these accessories express your attitude and approach. The following short explanations on the accessories might help you while selecting them for your garden.

Most of the gardens need containers as they resolve the problem of space for gardening to some extent. The advantage of containers in gardening over doing gardening in the ground is that containers allow you to fill in blank spots when your flowers die back. Also, your porch can be made to look colorful by using containers.

Garden fences and gates create backdrops and boundaries for your garden. They are wonderful to plant against and can really make all of your plants stand out. You can also use short decorative fencing as a border in your garden.

Finally, garden statues are a great way to show off whatever you are interested in. There is no limit to the different kinds of garden statues available, and you can do just about whatever you want with them.

No matter how you decide to personalize your garden, make sure you enjoy it. That is the most important part. There are two basic rules when it comes to garden statues that you should follow. First, if you are using large statues (3 foot or taller), then 1 per area of your garden will make your garden look good. If you use small statues then you can put them in groups to get maximum impact.

You will find that a garden that reflects your personality is a wonderful thing.

Landscape Design - Getting It On Paper 3 Perspectives

Generally speaking, three types of sketching can be employed to get a landscape picture on paper. The first type is the elevation drawing; the second is the isometric projection; and the third is the perspective.

Elevation

An elevation drawing is one that shows but one view or plane as seen from directly in front of the object. It shows height and width only and everything is drawn to the same scale. Such a drawing helps most when one is trying to visualize a foundation planting at optimum size.

Isometric

The isometric drawing is also drawn to true scale but, besides showing length and width, it gives the illusion of the third dimension. It requires more practice and a little more artistic ability than an elevation drawing or a top view plan. Though they are not at all essential, many times they help one decide which plans to execute.

Perspective

The third type of drawing - the perspective - requires a certain amount of artistic ability to start with and since it serves but little useful purpose in the hands of the amateur who wants to make his own landscape plans, it will not be discussed.

Perspective Modification

If the house is already built, a modification of the perspective sketch of the planting is filled in. This is much simpler than drawing a perspective, and is a good way for the amateur landscape designer to start.

Models

For those who are interested and many home owners are so proud of their properties that they do like to make models of them - the model is still another way of projecting one's landscape thoughts into the future.

A model need not be done in perfect detail, but it should be accurate enough to keep the house and all the plants in proper proportion. A great example for that is how to make beta fish plants in the right place. The advantage of making a model, or any of the various kinds of drawings mentioned, is that in or on it you can detect any basic errors before you have begun to work on the grounds and, therefore, such potential mistakes can be corrected at no cost or very small cost.

Making models is also a good outlet for the creative urge in all gardeners. At the same time, it lessens the characteristic American impatience at having to wait for a garden to grow up. If we can see a garden in the form of a model, we are more or less willing to wait for the fine but small plants to reach mature sizes.

The software of today makes designing a landscape on paper almost a thing of the past.

General Use For Landscape Plants

When developing the public area, we need only keep in mind three fundamental landscape principles that concern this particular part of a property. They are: (1) soften the architectural lines of the building by placing plants where the strong vertical lines meet the ground; (2) frame the building with trees; and (3) maintain an open lawn area.

We could state the first principle even more simply by saying that the plants should be located at the corners of the building and at either side of the entrances.

Architectural Lines

Height of Plants

In nearly every case the plants to be used at the corners of the building should be of a type that will naturally grow larger than those to be used at either side of the doorway. Generally speaking, the ideal ultimate height of a plant at the corner of a one- or two-story building should be a little less than half the distance from the ground to the eaves.

In deciding what plants to use, we must find out what their ultimate height must be if they are to soften the lines of the house. First, sketch the front of the house to scale (or use a photograph and tracing paper).

Then, following the above method draw straight lines from points on each outside edge of the house slightly less than halfway to the eaves, to the center of the front door sill. Note also that the plants on either side of the door should eventually reach only about as high as the line is at that particular point.

Plants at the corners of the house are always taller than those next to the front door. The one exception to this rule occurs when the house has corner windows that wrap around both sides of the house. Many times you will see that although the plants immediately under the windows are lower than, or just about the same height as, those at the entrance, the original thought of having taller plants at the corners is carried out by the addition of small flowering trees or larger shrubs at a distance from the window. This gives the same effect, but does not sacrifice ventilation or light through the corner windows.

Pointed Plants

If possible, do not use plants which come to a sharp point at either doors or windows. But there is rare exception to this rule: Suppose that you have a house with very tall, narrow windows, or high-peaked gables or dormers; the natural surroundings include sharp-pointed evergreens and jagged mountain tops. In this case pointed plants like ficus alii at doors and windows would fit the environment.

Another exception might apply to the owner of a modern ranch home. He might use sharp-pointed plants to break long, straight roof lines.

Know the secret why many people are interested on ficus alii care.
Enjoy Plants Year Round With a Window Greenhouse

If you like raising your own flowers, small vegetables, and herbs, a window greenhouse is a good alternative. Fresh fruits and vegetables along with fragrant flowers will be available to you during all seasons. Any window can be transformed into one of these small greenhouses, but kitchen greenhouse windows are most in vogue today. In contrast to garden greenhouses, greenhouse windows need just a little wall space and permit lots of light and enough space for a nice selection of plants.

A greenhouse window is a small box-like extension of the home. It consists of a roof that inclines down from the back end and also has front and side walls. You'll probably want to think about getting a greenhouse window which has shelves that are adjustable. You will have to select between vinyl and aluminum when you are putting your mini greenhouse together.

Condensation is more likely to take place in windows made of aluminum rather than vinyl. Because vinyl doesn't have as much conductivity as aluminum, there's more window heat. To provide the window extra strength the windows are generally framed by aluminum. These windows require very little maintenance. Since an aluminum greenhouse window is heavy and strong on the outside, it's able to accommodate a solid wood interior. Aluminum exteriors which are anodized need almost no upkeep. Both window kinds feature corners that are rounded to offer safety and give a lovely, clean appearance.

You need to carefully plan out the location of your plants to make certain they have access to a lot of sunlight. If you are dwelling in the northern hemisphere it makes the most sense to maximize sunlight in your greenhouse by having the window on the south or east side. However the amount of sun that your greenhouse gets is also affected by the surrounding landscape.

Before installing your greenhouse window, you'll have to determine the amount of afternoon and morning sun that enters the window you want to convert. If the window you have in mind does not have sufficient sunlight, you can use fluorescent lights too. This sort of defeats the reason for a greenhouse window, however they can come in handy when it is raining.

Installing a greenhouse window allows you to both open up the space of a room in addition to bringing in extra light. Just picked herbs for your cooking, the scent of flowers, and lush green plants can now all be yours, the whole year through. These advantages show the appeal of adding a windowsill greenhouse to your house.

Greenhouses are easy to build and maintain, and are available in an assortment of sizes and materials to suit every home and budget. You can even get an indoor greenhouse if you don't have a backyard. Learn more at Garden Greenhouses.

Growing Organic Garlic in Your Garden

Garlic is a spice you love to put in your recipes. It adds that special flavor to gravies, tomato sauces, soups, stews, pickles, salads, dressing and breads. Thus it is just logical that you could be growing garlic in your own plant garden.

Before starting to growing garlic in your own garden, it is best to have a background on how garlic is planted and maintained. Here is a quick look on how to grow garlic.

A loamy soil improved with organic material provides a suitable environment for planting garlic. If you are familiar with growing onions, then you won't get lost in growing garlic since their cultivation is alike. Generally, 3 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer is commended for every 100 sq. feet.

You may also use manure or compost every year to keep the soils nutritive in balance for growing garlic. Moreover, the soil should hold the right amount of moisture to avoid getting bulbs of strange shapes. Take note that clay soil will also produce irregular bulbs.

The time of planting garlic cloves is also vital to the expansion of garlic. This crop grows best on long days and warm temperatures. Additionally, you need to be planting garlic cloves early to allow for the development of the leaves and the stems while the days are short and cool. Growing garlic in this period makes sure a good crop at the end of the season.

When planting garlic cloves, they should be positioned 3 to 5 inches away from one another and a half to an in. deep. Ensure that they are in an upright position in the row. Remember that a decreased yield will happen when the bulbs are split into cloves long before they are planted. This causes the garlic to dry up and become unsuited for planting.

Being aware of when to harvest this pleasant plant is easy. You only need to work out if the pinnacle of the bulb is beginning to dry. This indicates that the garlic is ready for harvesting. In harvesting, don't pull the garlic to avoid damaging the stem. Rather, dig them up and allow them to dry.

Garlic is an indispensable item in the kitchen so it is necessary to include them in a plant garden. In planting garlic cloves, these are basic things that you need to understand. It involves soil needs, time of planting, spatial requirements, and technique of harvesting. After getting a birds eye view on these concerns, you are now ready to start planting and growing garlic in your own garden.

Hydroponic Lettuce - 9 Reasons To Grow Your Own Hydroponic Lettuce

If you're thinking of growing your very own hydroponic lettuce then you've chosen probably the easiest vegetable to grow hydroponically! They are also delicious and you can make some serious money!

Below are some reasons why you should grow hydroponic lettuce as opposed to growing them in the soil.

1. As you're not growing your lettuce in the soil, you're not going to have that soil taste that is just so hard to wash out. I'm sure you know what Im talking about!

2. You will not be passing on any soil borne diseases to your lettuce which is a real problem for many gardeners.

3. You will have no need to eliminate any soil loving pests so you won't need to invest in any expensive pesticides. As a result your lettuce will remain organic. We all know how slugs always seem to head straight for the lettuce dont we!

4. Once everything is set up, running costs are around 20% lower with hydroponic lettuce!

5. Maintenance time is reduced! You don't need to water hydroponic lettuce as all the nutrients are already there and weeding doesn't exist with hydroponic gardening. In fact all you'll need to do is pick the lettuce once it's ready.

6. If you space out planting your initial seeds by 1 week for 4 weeks, you'll have permanent lettuce yields. The growth phase for lettuce is 4 weeks.

7. You can grow hydroponic lettuce anywhere; rooftop, garden, window ledge, garage, conservatory or bedroom.

8. Hydroponic lettuce tends to grow an average of 40% larger than their soil born brothers. This is due to the fact that you have manipulated the growing environment to be optimal for lettuce. They will also have access to all the nutrients they need.

9. Hydroponic lettuce also grows much faster than other lettuce. This is mainly because the roots don't need to grow and spread out to find nutrients in the soil. This means money in the bank for you!

Hydroponic Lettuce is delicious and a great hobby if you decide to grow your own.
Beneath The Dandelions' Beauty

Spring is one of the four seasons and there are plenty of people who would choose spring over the others. According to them, spring is about hope. Spring is also a miracle. This is because they say that after the cold months of winter, spring brings everything around you back to life. That is some kind of magic and that is what spring has the ability to do. This is season is about bringing back all those plants from hibernation and make them alive once more.

One of those plants is the dandelion. For many, they believe that this is a plant that produces the most wonderful flowers. However, for those who have lawns or gardens, the dandelion to them is not just any plant - for them, it is an enemy because it is a weed. And this weed flourishes that great during its peak season which falls on the months of April until May. It has broad leaves and produces yellow flowers. It is also known as a perennial weed.

What you should know about dandelions is that despite the beauty that it shows off when it is at its peak, there is something that it is hiding. Now that comes in the form of the taproot. Its taproot goes really deep and it is quite fleshy. This is one of the reasons why it can be difficult to deal with this weed if you want to take it out manually. And what makes dandelions continue to thrive is the fact that when the yellow flowers mature, they then turn to white seeds which are easily blown by the wind to be brought to another parcel of land to grow.

Dandelions may look good on your lawn or your garden but if you think that such a weed is just not right for what you had worked on, then you can actually take it out. One of the techniques that most people resort to is to actually pull them out by hand. But that takes quite some time and quite a lot of effort since the taproot really goes that deep down. Now you can also opt to use herbicides for dandelions. You should apply the chemical once every 5 to 6 weeks to do the trick. You will know that it is working when the leaves of the weed start to wither. It may take you around six applications to successfully finish what you started.

There are ways that you can do to make sure that dandelions do not go growing in your lawn or garden come next spring. One of these is to apply pre-emergent herbicides around April so no germination happens. You can also try to mow your grass to the second highest setting. That way, the grass grows tall and it will crowd out any budding dandelions.

The Time To Lift The Landscape

October may provide brilliant color in the landscape but it also signals an end of another growing season. Let's look at some of the things needed to be done in the landscape.

Dahlias can remain in the ground until after frost. Cut off the stems six inches above the ground and lift carefully, for the tubers are brittle and break off easily. Discard any that do. Place the clumps in flats, stem side down, and let them dry off before storing. Just before storing cut off the fine roots and cut the stem back to within an inch or two of the crown. They are best stored in a cool place (about 40 degrees) but may be stored at a warmer temperature if covered with peatmoss or sand. Line the storage boxes with paper. A dusting of sulphur before storing will prevent rot. Be sure to tie labels to the clumps so you will know what is what next year.

Tuberous begonias are lifted after the foliage has yellowed, but don't remove the foliage until it is dry. Remove the dried stems and clean off the dry soil. Store the tubers in flats in a warm place (50 to 60 degrees) and cover them with peatmoss. They need good circulation of air to prevent rot.

Cannas should be lifted after the first frost and stored in a cool place. To prevent shriveling cover them with dry peatmoss or sand. Many, however, no longer store canna roots over winter, preferring to buy live plants each spring.

Lift Gladiolus corms as the leaves begin to turn yellow. After lifting, cut the foliage to within three inches of the corms and then let them dry off in the sun if possible for a little while each day. When completely dry, dust them with an insecticide to prevent thrips injury. Store them uncovered in a cool place.

Ismenes (Peruvian daffodils) must be lifted very carefully to preserve the root system. So, dig deeply. Spread out the plants indoors to dry. Remove the tops but not the roots. Store them uncovered in a place where the temperature will not go below 50 degrees.

Montbretias may be left in the ground if given a heavy covering of leaves. If lifted they should be removed from the ground in clumps with the soil clinging to them. Don't let the soil dry out.

Tuberose bulbs should be lifted in clumps and dried off for storage in a warm dry place. Divide into single bulbs during the winter or use a second year without dividing the clumps.

In The Greenhouse

Repotting is one of the round-the-year jobs. When in doubt about the need for repotting, knock the plant like the watermelon peperomia out of the pot. If the ball is well covered with roots it is time for repotting. Don't repot flowering plants that have flower buds forming. Soak new flower pots in a tub of water for at least a half hour before they are used.

Freesias that were potted and placed in the coldframe should now have several inches of growth. Bring them into a cool part of the greenhouse before frost. For better results give them a weekly feeding.

Watering. Don't just turn on the hose and water everything in sight. Water plants when they need it. When in doubt give the pot a sharp knock with the handle of your pocketknife and if the pot rings water is needed. A dull thud indicates the soil is still damp. Soil in benches that feels dry and somewhat crumbly needs a thorough soaking with the hose or watering pot.

Landscape Tools: Why are They Important for Landscaping Projects?

Landscape tools are very important when it comes to landscaping projects. Landscaping projects can help improve the look of your yard considerably, but there is a good deal of work required. Many tools available can help make these jobs easier, or in some cases, even possible. There are a few basic groups of tools that can help you perform a multitude of task. They are listed below.

Group 1 is the shovel.

The rake is the second group of tools.

The third tool group is the pruner, shear or lopper.

The fourth tool group is the wheel barrel or garden cart.

Group 1 is the shovel, which can be one of the most important tools for most. It is basically two parts, a handle and a flat piece of metal on the end. There are three types of shovel, each which varies by the shape of the metal. The first is the pointed or round tip shovel, which slices in to soil well. It is primarily used for digging. The second is the narrow shovel, which also digs, but makes smaller holes and work well in tight spaces. The last is the flat shovel, which is great for scooping. It does not dig into soil well, but has a larger surface area for moving things like gravel or sand.

Group 2 is the rake. It has a long handle with the rake head attached. Two main types are commonly seen, the leaf rake and bow rake. The leaf rake has thinner prongs. These pick up leaves and lighter material, but do not damage the ground below. The bow rake is heavier and sturdier, meant for moving heavy items like rocks and gravel.

Group 3 is the lopper, shear or pruner. These tools cut, snip and trim. Pruners are single hand devices made to cut through smaller, but still tough, items. These are good for precision work. Loppers are two-handed devices, intended to cut heavier and bigger items like tree limbs. The shear, commonly seen as a grass shear, is a two-handed device made to cut through thinner items, but in longer cuts. It is used mainly for shaping items like hedges and shrubs.

The wheel barrel or garden cart is the fourth group of tools. Both of these items are used to transfer large amounts of heavy and/or bulky material around. Garden carts roll on two wheels, which reduce its maneuverability, but increase its stability. Wheel barrels are the opposite, balancing on one wheel and having better maneuverability and less stability.

Landscape tools provide you the ability to perform many landscaping tasks. From digging holes with a shovel, to carting loads of gravel for a walkway with a wheel barrel, these tools are critical for many landscaping jobs.

If you are working on any landscape project, make sure you have the right landscape tools and all the landscape supplies to do the job right.
Is That Crabgrass You're Seeing

What could be the worst thing that you would not want to happen to your lawn or your garden? There may be different answers for different people. One may think that they would not want drought to happen. Another may look at insects as their worst enemy. On another note, another person may point at weeds as the worst thing that their lawn or garden may experience. Weeds can be really a nuisance. As long as there is still some root and a good leaf there, weeds can still continue to grow and you will have to tackle them over again.

One of the weeds that you should be on the lookout for is crabgrass. No, it does not resemble a crab in any way. What it looks like is orchard grass. This weed usually grows in patches. You will know that you are looking at crabgrass because they have side branches. These branches have wide leaves and they branch out. You will see that it forms like a star. You will also notice that it has blades that are wide. So are its leaves.

The best period for crabgrass falls during the months of July and August. This period is known as their peak time. With that, crabgrass is also known as a summer annual grass. But before the weed blooms during this time, you can actually make sure that it does not get to that point. What you can do is take out your chosen herbicide. Choose a pre-emergent one so that the seeds of the weed do not germinate and so the weed does not grow.

When summer is around, you will see that there is plenty of this weed growing around. It does not have to be just your lawn or your garden - it can also grow in various locations. The list includes the cracks on the roads. Or maybe even in the sidewalks. Experts say that when you see such already working their way, you should be on the alert that the seeds may have found their way to your lawn or garden and they may soon be growing there too. Now if you want them to grow there, then just let them be. If not, then start on the pre-emergent herbicide.

You do not want your lawn or your garden to suffer from any kind of harm - especially the kind of harm that you brought. So if you are thinking that herbicide may do more harm than good, then you can opt not to use that. You can just manually attack the crabgrass. But the downside to doing that is that there may still be some roots or even seeds. Come next year, you will probably see the weed growing back again.

An Easy Way To Compost

One of the true thrills of gardening is making your own compost. In addition to this you will need to handle plants, soil, rocks, fertilizer and soil conditioner. A pair of gloves will not only come in very handy it will be a necessity.

Composting is the process where materials that are destined for the landfill are used to create nutritional products for the garden. Compost is a soil-like substance that will function as a soil conditioner, a mulch and fertilizer. It will feed your garden the microorganisms that most plants need to grow healthy.

It is best if the compost pile is located near your garden and at the same time has enough concealment to not affect the overall look of your garden. You want it to be close to the garden for convenience but you do not want visitors to see the compost heap. A corral or a fenced area would do fine.

After you set up your composting area you begin the compost pile by arranging a 3:1 ratio of brown and green materials. Green ingredients contain nitrogen the brown ingredients contain carbon. In unison these components make up the foundation of a compost pile. The green organic items of gardening include grass clippings while the brown items are the dry leaves and other wood products.

If you are concerned about the possibility of a bad smell that would come out of your compost pile, don't worry about it. If you have the right combination of green and brown material you do not have to be concerned about a bad smell. Compost will have an earthy smell and it will not smell like rot.

One way to insure that your compost pile has the right combination of green and brown material is to collect a nice gathering of material before you make your pile. When you are ready to make your pile start with a one part of green material and follow it up with three parts brown material. The next layer should be some very course material such as twigs or straw, aeration between the layers is important. Think of a composting lasagna.

To get the process started quickly add some already composted material. This will help to start the process and introduce microbial activities in your compost heap.

Make sure that you add enough moisture to the pile. Dampness in the compost pile will help the breakdown of the organic materials . Think of a damp sponge.

If you are very concerned about the environment then you will be for a compost heap. This concept is all about giving back to the land what it has given you, and starting a compost heap is the best way to do that.
Tips On Buying Greenhouse Windows

by Bill Rowe

The windows you choose for your greenhouse will go a long way to determining if you have a successful greenhouse or not. Greenhouse windows contribute heavily to the energy management of your greenhouse. If you were to select the wrong material or use a window that is poorly constructed, then all the work you put into maintaining your greenhouse and the plants inside will be for nothing.

Be sure that you do not leave any gaps between the window frames. If the windows have gaps, they can release warm or cold air. You may end up with dead plants or crops if cold or freezing air comes in. Windows should be fitted carefully for this reason. Surely, this goes against the purpose of us building the greenhouse!

How To Select Greenhouse Windows

If you purchased a greenhouse kit then your windows should be included. This should also include the structures to support your greenhouse and all important building material with which you will build your greenhouse.

If you are looking for a larger structure, or one that can perhaps handle a heavier load or adverse conditions, then you may be receiving your windows from a greenhouse manufacturer. It is best to speak directly with a representative from the manufacturer, and whenever possible go to the company's location and inspect the various models so that you select one that is suitable for your needs.

If you would like to get more savings, and are a do it yourself person, you have the option to go out and find your windows. This gives you freedom to stick to your own customization and design. Windows can be bought either new or recycled and you can shop from a supplier or check out salvage yards.

It is important that you have proper fit. Don't always take for granted that the kit or prefabricated model you buy is perfect. You can make sure that your greenhouse windows and frames meet your criterion by inspecting each and every one of them.

Mosquito Plants Explained

Since you are reading this, chances are you are wondering about these mosquito plants. They seem like a great idea, doing everything organically to keep away plants. The question is:

Do mosquito plants do the trick?

Before looking at how effective it is, let?s understand the mosquito plant itself.

The mosquito plant is made of two things, the citronella grass the scented geranium. If you mix the two together, it is a formula that keeps mosquitoes away. These are available every spring, or year around in warmer climates.

You need to decide on where you want to place these mosquito plants. Most people who use them say they are best utilized in a high-activity area. If you walk by them and brush up against them, the odor becomes more active and mosquitoes stay far away.

If you are looking for a natural type of bug spray, you can also use the plant?s oils to rub on your skin. I would make sure that you are not allergic to this plant first though, so only use a small dose the first time.

Planting a new mosquito plant also takes some planning. You want it to be in a hot and dry place as well if you want it to grow large. The larger the plant is, the more odor the thing will emit to keep the pests away.

The cost of these mosquito plants vary depending on the size you want. A small one can cost just 5 dollars, while big ones cost around 50 dollars. These are available at all the local nurseries and green houses.

Surprisingly, online retailers sell these plants as well, and for very cheap. They will ship them to quickly and safely as well. This comes in handy if your local nursery is a little low on inventory.
