(Photo by Drew Meyer)</p></div> <p>While many area school districts were scrambling to postpone and reschedule district and regional swim meets last weekend, swim teams in Montgomery County were merely missing out on another dual meet. The snowed out dual meets impacted divisional standings, but with divisionals slated for Saturday and the county championships scheduled for Feb. 20, the need to rapidly reschedule big meets was not as severe.</p> <p>As of Monday, teams were still planning to hold divisional meets on Saturday which would keep them on schedule for the upcoming county and Metros championships. However, unlike private school leagues like the <a href="http://www.wmpssdl.org/">Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim and Dive League</a>, which has the flexibility to hold mid-week meets to account for winter weather, MCPS are heavily limited in their pool time, making it difficult to quickly reschedule a meet involving multiple schools. Six county teams lost meets scheduled for Jan. 30 while all teams were snowed out on Dec. 19.</p> <p>“Unless there's ridiculous amounts of snow on the ground Saturday morning, we're still going,” <a href="http://wiki.reachforthewall.com/High_Schools/Montgomery_County_High_Schools/Whitman_High_School">Whitman</a> Coach Geoff Schaefer said. “The beauty of the non-public school leagues is they can just say, ‘Hey, we're going to have it at Prep,' or, ‘We're going to run this meet on a Thursday with timed finals at this place.' They have a little bit more flexibility while the county is more strict about what they're going to do and how they're going to handle things.”</p> <p>As for the missed dual meets, Schaefer favors a proposal put forth by <a href="http://wiki.reachforthewall.com/High_Schools/Montgomery_County_High_Schools/Walter_Johnson_High_School">Walter Johnson</a> Coach Jamie Grimes that would use the computer setup at Saturday's divisional meets to create virtual swim meets. Since divisionals take the top three swimmers from each school for each event — just like dual meets — teams that had their dual meets canceled could score their times from divisionals against one another to determine who the winner likely would have been. Fitting in the dual meets is imperative for the county since they move the best team in each division up a level and the lowest ranked team down at the end of each season.</p> <p>“Nothing has been decided yet officially,” Schaefer said. “But if they used a situation where everything was just run as virtual swim meets at divisionals, it would make things go a lot smoother with regards to completing the season. I think that's the clear choice, but that's my opinion.”</p> <p>The WMPSSDL has yet to reschedule its postponed championship meet from last week. The Boiling Springs trio of Grace Vaughn, Katie McMahon and Brittany Sheaffer rounded out the top five.</p><p>In the boys&rsquo; meet, Wilfong notched a 477.95 to turn back the efforts of Susquenita product Zac Ashley. Big Spring&rsquo;s Donnie Sauter scored a 388.35 to take home a bronze medal for the host Bulldogs, while teammate Dewey Stout finished fifth.</p><p><b>SCHEDULE CHANGE</b><br />Due to the impending snowstorm, the start time for today&rsquo;s Mid-Penn AAA Diving Championships at Cumberland Valley has been moved up to 3 p.m. If weather postpones the meet further, it will then be moved to Tuesday, Feb. 16.</p><p><b>OTHERS</b><br />Mechanicsburg cruised to a sweep of Central Dauphin, 133-21 in boys and 133-35 in girls. (Photo by Paul Tenorio/The Washington Post)</p></div> <p><a href="http://reachforthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/regional_boys_diving_results.pdf" target="_blank">FULL NORTHERN REGION BOYS' DIVING RESULTS</a></p> <p>Robinson sophomore Cory Bowersox, the defending Virginia AAA state champion, won his first Northern Region crown last Thursday, taking the title with a score of 525.05.</p> <p>Bowersox, who finished second at regionals last year to Annandale's Sean McKinney, who will dive at LSU, this time outscored the Atoms' senior, who finished in second with 489.40 points.</p> <p>Both scores are well above the All-American consideration cut of 375.00. </p> <p>Washington-Lee sophomore Carl Buergler took third with a score of 453.90, followed by Robinson senior Frank Burdell (411.55) and Madison junior Ryan Fox (408.10).</p> <p>An update on some of the rescheduling for the swim and dive championships:</p> <p>The Northern Region boys' swim championship will be held Friday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Oak Marr RECenter, while the girls' diving competition is set for Feb. 12 at Audrey Moore RECenter at 10:30 a.m.</p> <p>The Northwest Region swim championship, scheduled for Wednesday at Radford University, has been rescheduled for next Monday, Feb. 15. The meet will remain at Radford and will start at 12:30 p.m.</p> <p>We are still awaiting word on the Virginia AA Dulles District meet. Originally the plan was for the meet to be held on Tuesday, but Loudoun County schools will remain closed tomorrow and thus a plan of possibly scrapping the Region II meet and holding districts on Friday may go into effect.
